Efektifitas pendidikan kesehatan gigi yang diberikan dengan metode ceramah dan metode diskusi masih terdapat perbedaan pendapat dari para peneliti, ada yang berpendapat bahwa ceramah lebih efektif digunakan sebagai metode pendidikan kesehatan. Peneliti lain berpendapat bahwa diskusi lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan, sikap dan keterampilan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektifitas pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan menggunakan metode ceramah dan diskusi terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan, sikap, dan keterampilan pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut pramurukti di panti wreda dalam meningkatkan kebersihan gigi dan mulut usila. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah eksperimen semu dengan pretes-postes. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah 42 orang pramurukti yang terdiri dari 18 pramurukti dari Panti Wreda Elim yang diberikan pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode ceramah dan 24 orang pramurukti dari Panti Wreda Pengayoman yang diberikan pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode diskusi. Hasil analisis dengan t-test menunjukkan hasil bahwa : 1) pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode ceramah dan metode diskusi efektif meningkatkan pengetahuan pramurukti tentang pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut serta kebersihan gigi usila, tetapi metode diskusi memiliki nilai rerata selisih lebih tinggi dari pada metode ceramah; 2) pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode ceramah dan metode diskusi efektif meningkatkan sikap dan keterampilan pramurukti tentang pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut, tetapi metode ceramah memiliki nilai rerata selisih lebih tinggi dari pada metode diskusi. Berdasar hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa 1) Pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode diskusi lebih efektif meningkatkan pengetahuan pramurukti tentang pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut serta kebersihan gigi usila dibandingkan dengan metode ceramah; 2) Pendidikan kesehatan gigi dengan metode ceramah lebih efektif meningkatkan sikap dan keterampilan pramurukti tentang pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut usila dibandingkan dengan metode diskusi

The effectiveness of dental health education by giving lecture and discussion methods are still controversial. This study was aimed at finding out the effectiveness of dental health education using lecture and discussion methods to improve the knowledge, attitude, and skills of nursing home of the institutionalized elderly people, and to improve the oral hygiene of elderly people. A quasi experimental with pretestposttest design was used to prove the effectiveness of the lecture and discussion methods. Fourty two nursing home of the institutionalized of elderly people were used as the study samples. These samples consisted of eighty nursing home from Panti Wreda Elim, they were given dental health education with lecture method, while twenty four nursing home of the institutionalized of Panti Wreda Pengayoman were given dental health education with discussion method. The t-test analysis showed that : 1) dental health education with discussion and lecture method was effective in improving the knowledge of oral hygiene, and in improving the oral hygiene of the elderly people; 2) dental health education with discussion and lecture method was effective in improving the attitude and skills of the nursing home of the institutionalized elderly people in oral hygiene care. It can be concluded that : 1) dental health education with discussion method was more effective in improving the knowledge of oral hygiene of nursing home of the institutionalized elderly people and in improving the oral hygiene of elderly people then the lecture method; 2) dental health education with lecture method was more effective in improving the attitude and skills of nursing home of the institutionalized elderly people in oral hygiene care then discussion method.
