The Crises of American family in the Suburban area of the 1950s :: A Study on John Updike's Rabbit, Run

Daerah suburban di Amerika pada tahun 50an merupakan daerah makmur dan dihuni rata-rata oleh orang-orang yang secara ekonomi tercukupi. Ternyata, era kemakmuran ini mempunyai sisi lain yaitu krisis dalam keluarga Amerika. Studi ini bertujuan untuk melihat lebih dalam yaitu keluarga Amerika seperti yang diceritakan Updike dalam novelnya Rabbit, Run. Lebih lanjut, studi ini juga ingin mengeksplorasi keluarga Amerika dan permasalahannya- krisis hubungan dalam keluarga. Studi ini juga mengkaji hal-hal dibalik krisis keluarga. Hal-hal tersebut adalah sebab dan akibat dari krisis keluarga. Krisis hubungan dalam keluarga adalah masalah yang unik, – setiap keluarga mengalami krisis hubungan dalam keluarga yang berbeda- karena itu peneliti merujuk kepada nilai-nilai keluarga yang jamak pada tahun 50an – keluarga tradisional - khususnya di daerah suburban seperti Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Pendekatan interdisipliner diperlukan untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang menyeluruh. Studi ini ini melihat dari sisi sejarah, sosiologi, sastra dan psikologi dalam mempelajari masalah krisis hubungan dalam keluarga kelas menengah dalam keluarga Amerika tahun 50an. Studi ini berkesimpulan bahwa krisis hubungan dalam kelurga kelas menengah keluarga Amerika di daerah suburban tahun 50an ternyata dipengaruhi oleh fator internal dan factor eksternal. Studi ini juga menarik kesimpulan yang lain bahwa masalah atau krisis sebuah keluarga tidak akan terpecahkan selagi tidak ada kemauan anggota keluarga tersebut untuk memecahkannya. Bantuan pihak luar tidak akan banyak membantu. Faktor lain yang memegang peranan penting adalah sisi religi seseorang dimana sejarah religi sesorang dapat berfungsi sebagai pengontrol individu juga sebagai peredam emosi individu

1950s is the era of contentment for America, especially for suburbia. Yet, it left crises on the smallest unit of society, the family, due to generational shift of the social values that affect family values. Revealing this family crisis is the main objecti ve of this thesis. This objective is achieved through the close study on John Updike’s Rabbit, Run. To be able to have a total comprehension of the issue, this thesis applies the interdisciplinary analysis, and studies the matter from the viewpoints of sociology, history, psychology, and literature. The sociological point of view enables the writer to understand the relationships among individuals, groups, behavior of the society and cultures of white Anglo Saxon of the 1950s in the suburban area. The historical angle enables the writer to understand some significant aspects of the American families in the 1950s. This study also employs the psychological point of view, as it is related to the understanding the psychological experiences of the characters. With the assumption that literature may be used as mental evidence of the phenomena happening in the society, this study also employs the mimetic theory. This analysis proves that John Updike’s Rabbit, Run mirror the American family of the 1950s in suburban area. The analysis also shows that family crisis is naturally rooted on individual crisis, regarded that family is a unity of an institution. The family crisis in the 1950s was mostly an individual crisis that contradicts to social conformity. Traditional family roles the suburban society demanded the people to conform with the values of traditional family. Crises in a family would not be solved if the member of family did not have self-determination to find a solution. External helps therefore would lie in vain. This study proves that religious faith functioned as life redemption to family problems.
