Technological developments in global economic dynamics have created the phenomenon of the digital economy. Technology is used to create efficient business flows between producers and consumers. However, a different perspective on how technology works in today's economy can be gained by considering that the economic process has shifted to be data-oriented. The way companies accumulate capital is by using technology, which exploits the identity and activities of its users on the internet and then analyzes them into shadow profiles. The data is then sold to economic actors or political actors for their interests.
This thesis aims to analyze technology in Facebook user data management in the 2016 United States General Election. The relevance of technology is analyzed using surveillance capitalism and critical theory of technology. This thesis finds that Facebook technology persistently collects and analyzes user data for "personalization" purposes. In the case of the election, Facebook technology was used to analyze voter preferences in the election. The data available on the service was able to amplify the spread of populist propaganda news in support of Donald Trump and had a significant impact on ideological polarization. The analysis also revealed that this case altered the political landscape of data and efforts to utilize technology for the benefit of society.
