Radon-222 is a class of radioactive noble gases and comes from the decay of 238U which is distributed in rocks. Radon can accumulate in water due to sedimentation processes from rocks and groundwater infiltration. If inhaled, radon can cause lung and stomach cancer. Thus, research was carried out to identify how it was distributed 222Rn and its relationship to shallow groundwater flow patterns around KST G.A. Siwabessy, Jakarta Selatan.
This study has been done with 8 shallow-well groundwater samples, 6 of them are groundwater community wells. Durridge RAD 7 device is used to detect radon concentration in the sample. Measurements were taken for 5 minutes with 4 repetitions.
The highest concentration measured in the shallow well was 8200 Bq/m³ and in the two deep-well was 5600 Bq/m³. Statistical analysis with probability plot obtained a mean 222Rn background concentration of 3787.5 Bq/m³, a mean threshold of 5020 Bq/m³, and an anomalous mean of 8.700 Bq/m³. This value is still below the limit of 222Rn contaminants in drinking water set by the EPA which is 148000 Bq/m³. The distribution of 222Rn in relation to shallow groundwater flow patterns is the closer to the river, the higher concentration.
