Sunlight emits UV rays which can be dangerous to the human body. If accumulated in the human body in excess, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight causes health problems such as lupus erythematosus, sunburn on the skin, hyperpigmentation and other problems. Therefore, extra protection from exposure to UV radiation is needed, one of which is by using photoprotective agents in sunscreen cream preparations. One compound that has the potential to be a photoprotective agent is hexagamavunon-5 (HGV-5), a curcumin analogue compound that has potent antioxidant activity. Therefore, research was conducted to determine and evaluate the optimum formula for sunscreen cream preparations with the active compound HGV-5.
Optimization of the cream formula was carried out using the Simplex Lattice Design method in Design Expert software with different concentrations of stearic acid and cetyl alcohol in the formula. Next, the optimum formula was determined and the physical properties-stability of the cream preparation were tested. In vitro sun protection factor (SPF) testing was also carried out. The research data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software.
The research results showed that the HGV-5 sunscreen cream provides high protection with an SPF value of 42.42. The optimum formula for sunscreen cream that contains curcumin analog compound HGV-5, consisted of 2.3% stearic acid and 3.5?tyl alcohol. The physical characteristic responses are pH value of 5.15 ± 0,02 and viscosity of 3630.5 ± 163,47 mPa.s. This preparation has stable organoleptic properties, adhesiveness, and emulsion type during 3 cycles of cycling test. On the other hand, the pH, viscosity and spreadability of the cream showed unstable results.
