Background : The livor mortis condition is one of the transformations that the corpse goes through after death. Many components of the livor mortis, including color, position, and post-suppression alterations, are evaluated during the autopsy examination. These postmortem changes in criminal (homicide) situations might be helpful in figuring out the approximate time of death and confirming or refuting a prospective suspect's alibi. This demands for proper execution of the examination procedure in accordance with the defined standard operating procedures. Thus it's important to understand how the livor mortis assessment is described. This study will discuss how livor mortis is evaluated in homicide cases.
Objective : To determine the description of livor mortis assessment in homicide cases handled at Dr. Sardjito's Forensic Medicine Installation from 2014 to 2019.
Methods : This study is an observational descriptive study using a cross-sectional design. The description of the livor mortis assessment in homicide cases serves as the study's variable. Secondary data from visum et repertum and chronological information about the murder case will be used.
Results : Based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 82 homicide cases were autopsied at the RSUP Dr. Sardjito Forensic Medicine Installation between 2014 and 2019, with 2014 having the largest number of cases. Homicide cases with livor mortis assessments that adhered to standard operating procedures found in 80 (97.6%) cases where an improper assessment occurred in cases with victims who were male and female, aged 10–19 and 20–29, unemployed and private employees, died from sharp trauma, and were found inside and outside the home. The majority of homicide-related deaths involved male victims, who ranged in age from 20 to 60 and worked as private employees. The majority of killings are committed outside the home and are caused by blunt trauma.
Conclusion : the majority of livor mortis evaluations in homicide instances comply to standard operating standards.
