Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a disease with long-term medication therapy. Medication adherence is needed to routinely undergo therapy to prevent the risk of acute complications, reduce long-term complications, reduce morbidity and mortality rates. This study aims to determine the correlation of factors including sociodemographic characteristics, disease characteristics, treatment characteristics, and health service characteristics to the level of adherence to treatment of patients with T2DM, so that the success of treatment therapy can be realized.
This study is a quantitative study using observational methods with a cross-sectional approach. The research was conducted in January-February 2024. By using accidental sampling method, 117 respondents were obtained who were T2DM patients at four primary health centers in Southern Yogyakarta City who had met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The adherence level of respondents was measured using an instrument in the form of the Morisky Green Levine Adherence Scale (MGLS) questionnaire.
The results showed that T2DM patients at the South Yogyakarta City Primary Health Centers had a moderate level of adherence. In the results of bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test, there is an associated between some sociodemographic characteristics, namely occupation (p=0.006) and income level (p=0.006) and some health service characteristics, namely completeness of health facilities (p=0.013), timeliness (p=0.032), responsiveness (p=0.037), politeness (p=0.017), and comfort (p=0.005) to the medication adherence of DM patients. There was no correlation between the characteristics of patient condition, disease, and treatment on medication adherence of T2DM patients. The causes of non-adherence medication are patients forget to take the medicine, feeling healthy, and the presence of side effects.
