Background
Adipose tissue not only stores passive fat but also actively produces pro-inflammatory cytokines that induce the release of C-reactive protein (CRP), causing low-grade systemic inflammation in people with excess weight. Physicians are one of the professions that are at risk for obesity. Research shows that 55% of doctors are overweight or obese, and the relationship between CRP and obesity index in some studies has shown varying results.
Purpose
This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the obesity index and C-reactive protein levels in physicians.
Method
The study conducted was a cross-sectional evaluation of the correlation between obesity index and CRP levels. The research subjects are prospective residents who undergo a medical examination at the FK-KMK UGM Clinical Pathology Laboratory in May 2023. Samples were obtained using consecutive sampling, including all subjects who met the inclusion criteria until the required number of samples was reached based on calculations. The correlation test of CRP levels with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) was estimated using Pearson/Spearman. A p-value of less than 0.05 is regarded as statistically significant.
Result
There were 378 subjects with a median age of 30 years (25-49 years) consisting of 48.4% men and 51.6% women. The BMI range was 14.9-43.3 kg/m2 with a median of 24.7 kg/m2. CRP levels had a median of 4.8 mg/L (2.2-36.4 mg/L). Waist circumference in men and women has a significant positive correlation with CRP levels (r=0.297; r= 0.406; p <0 r=0.329; r=0.368;>
Conclusion
There was a positive correlation between BMI and WC on CRP levels in the physician population.
