Background: Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest malignancy in the population. One of the main etiologies of colorectal cancer is genetic mutation, especially Kirsten rat sarcoma-2 viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) mutation. KRAS mutation found in approximately 40% of cases. Research linking age and gender with KRAS gene mutations in colorectal adenocarcinoma cases is rare, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, further research regarding the relationship between age and gender with the incidence of colorectal cancer needs to be carried out.
Objective: This study aims to identify the correlation between age and sex with KRAS mutation in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients.
Method and Material: We collected 617 medical records of primary colorectal adenocarcinoma patients who had histopathological examinations in 2015-2021 at the Anatomical Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We analyzed the results using Chi Square Test in SPSS 25.
Result: Among 617 colorectal adenocarcinoma cases, 205 cases (33.2%) had a positive KRAS mutation. The age range of patients in this study was 21 to 88 years, with an average patient age of 52.54 years and 52 years median age of diagnosis. There were 343 male patients (55.6%) and 274 female patients (44.4%). Our study found that there was no statistically significant correlation between sex and KRAS mutation in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma (p-value= 0.171). There was also no correlation between age and KRAS mutation in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients in Indonesia (p-value= 0.813).
Conclusion: There is no statistically significant correlation between age, sex, and KRAS mutation in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients in Indonesia.
