Implementasi teknologi dan praktek manajemen dalam penentuan prioritas unggulan pada industri manufaktur

Dalam lingkungan yang kompetitif, sulit bagi plant untuk mencapai kinerja optimal hanya dengan mengandalkan satu prioritas unggulan saja. Syarat agar plant dapat menerapkan beberapa prioritas unggulan sekaligus adalah menghilangkan trade-off diantara prioritas unggulan tersebut. Penelitian ini menganalisis apakah penerapan teknologi dan praktek manajemen dapat menghilangkan trade-off. Penelitian ini mengamati penerapan teknologi dan praktek manajemen untuk mengeliminasi trade-off prioritas unggulan berdasarkan pada paradigma matrik produk- proses yang mensyaratkan adanya kesesuaian antara pilihan proses dan prioritas unggulan. Variable yang digunakan untuk mengeliminasi trade-off diantaranya adalah teknologi pemrosesan, teknologi pendesainan produk, JIT dan program kualitas. Unit analisis penelitian ini adalah plant dari perusahaan besar dan menengah yang dipilih secara convenient. Kuesioner dikirm melalui mail survey menghasilkan sampel akhir sejumlah 78 plants (respons rate 40,01%) dari beragam industri. Untuk menyusun 4 prioritas unggulan digunakan confirmatory factor analysis sedangkan untuk mengklasifikasikan pilihan proses digunakan non-hierarchical clustering. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa pilihan berhubungan kuat dengan prioritas unggulan yang dipilih kecuali pada prioritas unggulan pengiriman. Perusahaan manufactur tidak mempertimbangkan dalam penentuan pilihan proses sebab pengiriman dianggap tidak penting dalam persaingan. Sebagian besar plant masih mengikuti pola matrik produk-proses dengan memposisikan dirinya pada diagonal atau mendekati diagonal matrik. Plant lain yang memilih posisi ekstrim diluar diagonal untuk membedakan dengan plant lain pada suatu industri. Kelompok plant ini. Kelompok plant ini berhasil mengeliminasi trade-off melalui teknologi dan praktek manajemen kecuali dua jenis trade off, yaitu biaya-kustomisasi dan biaya-kualitas.

In competitive environment, it is very difficult for a plant to gain optimal performance by relying on a competitive priority only. The prerequisite to implement several competitive priorities simultaneously is elimination of trade-off among them. This study examines the implementation of technology and managerial practice to eliminate competitive priorities trade-off based on the product-process matrix paradigm that requires alignment between process choice and selected competitive priorities. Several variables used to eliminate the trade-offs are processing technology, product design technology, just in time, and quality program. Plant from medium and large companies are chosen conveniently as unit of analysis. Questionnaires were sent to plant managers through mail survey yielded a final sample of 78 plants (response rate 40,01%) from various industries. By utilizing confirmatory factor analysis, the study analizes four competitive prioirities and non- hierarchical clustering for classifying process choice. The study found that process choice is strongly linked to selected competitive priorities except for delivery. Manufacturers do not consider delivery during process choice selection since it is not considered as a variable of important competitive prioirities. A large proportion of plants still follow product-process matrix framework by positioning themselves lie or near the diagonal matrix. The other plants select extreme position outside the diagonal to differentiate themselves from othe players in the industry. This group of plants is successful to eliminate several trade-offs through technology and management initiatives, except for two types of trade-off including cost- customization and cost-quality.
