Sulfated mesoporous nanozirconia has been synthesized from bearing mineral of tin mining which has been further applied as catalyst for oleic acid esterification. The purpose of this research was to synthesize sulfated nanozirconia from zircon sand which is a bearing mineral of tin mining and to study its catalytic activity as a heterogeneous acid catalyst for the esterification of oleic acid.
The synthesis process was first carried out by alkali fusion of zircon sand using solid NaOH at various temperatures of 600, 700 and 800 °C. The process was continued with acid leaching using HCl solution and sol-gel method using NH4OH solution. The product was calcined at various temperatures of 600, 700 and 800 °C. The zirconia obtained was modified using the sulfation method. The product was characterized using XRF. XRD, FTIR, SAA and TPD.
The result shows that the crystal phase of the synthesized zirconia is tetragonal. The composition of the synthesized zirconia is 77.10 % with degree of crystallinity as high as 86.79 % at the fusion temperature of 800 °C. The sulfated zirconia was shown to have the characteristic of mesoporous pores with pore size of 3.56 nm, the BET specific area of 55.13 m2/g and average particle size of 108.83 nm. The acidity of zirconia was successfully increased two times after sulfation from 0.81 g/mmol to 1.89 g/mmol. The sulfated zirconia was used as a catalyst for oleic acid esterifiaction at various reaction temperatures of room temperature, 60, 90, 120 and 150 °C. The reaction produced methyl oleate as the dominant product with the highest conversion rate of 87.61 % at a reaction temperature of 90 °C.
