American Freedom of Speech in Transnational Dialogue: A Critical Discourse Analysis on Daryl Morey’s Tweet about Hong Kong Protest

Penelitian ini berjudul: “Kebebasan berpendapat di Amerika dalam dialog transnasional: analisis wacana kritis pada tweet daryl morey tentang protes Hong Kong menjelaskan konteks politik, budaya, dan sosial, konflik antara NBA (National Basketball Association) dan China yang dimulai oleh twit Morey mengenai pro-Hong Kong protes. Penelitian ini berfokus pada alasan tersembunyi yang membuat tweet Daryl Morey menjadi kontroversial di Amerika dan Cina. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data primer adalah twit-twit respon dari tweet Daryl Morey tentang protes Hong Kong dan twit awal Daryl morey tentang protes Hong Kong. Penelitian ini juga menerapkan perspektif transnasional; three-dimensional CDA Fairclough digunakan untuk menganalisis dan menjawab dua pertanyaan penelitian: bagaimana tweet Morey tentang Hong Kong menjadi masalah politik antara NBA dan China dan bagaimana masalah ini mempengaruhi NBA. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan lima alasan mengapa kontroversi Morey menjadi isu politik antara NBA dan China: Ada perbedaan interpretasi terhadap tweet tersebut; di mana Amerika menafsirkannya sebagai kebebasan berbicara dan berekspresi, namun Cina menafsirkannya sebagai tantangan terhadap kedaulatan mereka. Twitter juga memainkan peran penting dalam memicu konflik; Popularitas bola basket di Cina memperluas eskalasi konflik, dan perang dagang antara Amerika dan Cina juga menjadi alasan penting yang meningkatkan konflik. Selain itu, karena kontroversi ini menjadi masalah politik, konflik itu memberikan efek “mahal” pada NBA. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masalah ini memiliki tiga efek pada NBA: Propaganda Media dan Sensitivitas Budaya mengelilingi NBA, perang media sosial dan polarisasi penggemar, serta peningkatan sensor mandiri di kalangan pemain NBA. Kontroversi Morey menunjukkan bagaimana bola basket telah menjadi favorit orang-orang di China. Namun, twit Morey "menghancurkan" ikatan positif China dengan NBA. Orang-orang dari kedua negara melihat satu sama lain berbeda, dan nilai-nilai dan perspektif yang bertentangan mereka mendorong kontroversi. Akibatnya, twit Morey menjadi viral, mengganggu orang Cina, yang melihatnya sebagai ancaman terhadap kedaulatan nasional – dan “membakar” orang Amerika, yang menganggapnya sebagai bagian dari kebebasan berbicara. Faktor-faktor ini menyebabkan konflik politik antara NBA dan China, menciptakan banyak efek "mahal" pada NBA.

This research entitled: "American freedom of speech in transnational dialogue: a critical discourse analysis on Daryl Morey’s tweet about hong kong protest" explains the political, cultural, and social context of the conflict between the NBA (National Basketball Association) and China that was triggered by Morey's tweet about supporting the Hong Kong protest. The research focuses on the hidden reason that made Daryl Morey's tweet controversial in America and China. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data are response tweets of Daryl Morey's tweet about the Hong Kong protest and Daryl Morey's initial tweet about the Hong Kong protest. This research also applies a transnational perspective; Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA is used to analyze and answer two research questions: how Morey's tweet about Hong Kong became a political issue between the NBA and China and how this issue affected the NBA. The research finding shows five reasons on how Morey's controversy became a political issue between the NBA and China: There are differences in interpretations of the tweet; where the U.S. interpreted it as freedom of speech and expression, but the Chinese interpreted it as a challenge to their sovereignty. Twitter also played an essential role in fuelling the conflict; basketball's popularity in China expanded the escalation of the conflict, and the trade war between the U.S. and China was also a crucial reason for escalating the conflict. Moreover, as the controversy became a political problem, the conflict had costly effects on the NBA. The research finding shows that the issue has three effects on the NBA: Media Propaganda and Cultural Sensitivity surrounding the NBA, social media war and fan polarization, and an increase in self-censorship among NBA players. The Morey controversy shows how basketball has become people's favorite in China. However, Morey's tweet "cracked" China's positive bond with the NBA. People from both countries view each other differently, and their conflicting values and perspectives fuelled the controversy. Because of this, Morey's tweet became viral, upsetting the Chinese, who saw it as a threat to national sovereignty—and fuelled the Americans, who saw it as part of freedom of speech. These factors caused the political conflict between the NBA and China, creating many "costly" effects on the NBA.
