Representing Islam in American Superhero Series of 2022

Konflik terkait Islam di dunia Barat, terutama di Amerika Serikat, sudah berlangsung jauh sebelum peristiwa 11 September 2001 terjadi. Namun demikian, representasi negatif terhadap Islam semakin buruk pasca-11/9, kejadian tersebut mempromosikan stereotip yang tersebar luas melalui media utama, membentuk serangkaian karakteristik tertentu yang digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi Muslim, seperti janggut tebal, aksen berat, penampilan Arab, kerudung, dan banyak lagi. Bagaimanapun, pada tahun 2022 Marvel Studios merilis serial televisi ke-7nya, Ms. Marvel, yang menampilkan karakter utama pahlawan super Muslim pertama dalam sejarah serial pahlawan super Amerika. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bagaimana Islam direpresentasikan dalam serial pahlawan super Amerika dan kontestasi kekuatan yang membentuk representasi ini. Dengan menerapkan Teori Representasi Stuart Hall di bawah metode kualitatif, lima serial pahlawan super Amerika terbaik tahun 2022, yaitu Ms. Marvel, She Hulk: Attorney at Law, Peacemaker, The Boys Season 3, dan Moon Knight, menjadi data utama untuk penelitian ini. Hasil analisis menemukan bahwa Islam masih secara dominan direpresentasikan sebagai Arab dalam serial-serial ini, yang juga masih konsisten dengan stereotip lama tentang Islam. Namun, melalui analisis, kontestasi kuasa dalam proses produksi mengungkapkan pergeseran yang signifikan dari stereotip negatif ke citra yang lebih positif tentang Muslim. Temuan ini menyoroti dinamika perubahan dalam representasi Muslim, didorong oleh perkembangan komunitas Muslim dan tuntutan pasar, yang berkontribusi pada pemahaman yang lebih merata tentang pergeseran budaya dalam representasi Islam. 

The conflict of Islam in the Western world, especially in the United States, predates the September 11th, 2001 (Henceforth 9/11) incident. Even so, negative representations of Islam worsened post-9/11, perpetuating stereotypes which spread widely through mainstream media, constructing a set of certain characteristics which are used to identify Muslims, such as thick beards, heavy accents, an Arab appearance, headscarves and many more. However in 2022, Marvel Studios released its 7th television series, Ms. Marvel, featuring what is said to be the first Muslim superhero main character in the history of American superhero series. Following the long run of conflict and the release of the series, this research aims to uncover how Islam is represented in American superhero series and the contestation of power shaping this representation. Applying Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory under a qualitative method, the top 5 American superhero series of 2022 which consist of Ms. Marvel, She Hulk: Attorney at Law, Peacemaker, The Boys Season 3, and Moon Knight, serve as primary data for the research. The analysis reveals that Islam is predominantly represented as Arab in these series, which is still consistent with the old stereotype of Islam. However, through the analysis, the contestation of power in the production process reveals a significant shift from negative stereotypes to a more positive image of Muslims. The findings highlight the changing dynamics of Muslim representation, driven by the evolving Muslim community and market demands, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of cultural shifts in the representation of Islam.
