The discourse on degrowth as a sustainable development alternative pathway to the economic growth-centric Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a response to the implications of climate change has been receiving increasing attention from scholars in recent years. However, there is still minimal research on how degrowth could provide an alternative sustainable development path tailored to the Global South context. To provide details on to what extent degrowth could be relevant in creating socio-ecological sustainability in the Global South regarding to the SDGs, this paper reports the results of a systematic review of the literature. The review is based on three recurring themes: i) degrowth for socio-ecological sustainability ii) degrowth in the Global South and iii) degrowth and the Sustainable Development Goals. From the results, this article derives that decolonial degrowth is relevant for creating socio-ecological sustainability in the Global South as it would lead to a systemic transformation to a sustainable system that respects ecological boundaries, promotes environmental justice, and addresses historical injustices and ecological debt.
