Ethylene oxide is one of the intermediate ingredients that cannot be fulfilled in Indonesia. Ethylene oxide is directly used in various household and health sectors, including as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent for medical devices. In the chemical industry, the most important derivative of ethylene oxide is ethylene glycol which is widely used as antifreeze for car radiators in the winter and the manufacture of polyester.
Ethylene oxide is produced by direct oxidation ethylene with air. Raw materials required are ethylene of 126.280 tons/year and air of 350.620 tones/year. Reaction take place in fixed bed multitube reactor with silver alumina catalyst (Ag/Al2O3) at temperature between of 493,15 K and pressure of 25 bar. Gas product from reactor are sent into the absorber to absorb ethylene oxide using water as solvent. Ethylene oxide from absorber liquid effluent are separated from solvent by distillation process and ethylen oxide 95,0% purity are obtained.
The plant will be established in 2026 at Cilegon Industrial Estate Area (KIEC), Banten and has 197.800 m2 area with ethylene oxide capacity are 60.000 tons/year with ethylene oxide product sales of US$5,100,00/tons. Fixed capital of this plant is US$ 85.517.550 and the working capital is US$ 19.307.039. Based on the economic analysis, this plant has 39,03% of Break Event Point (BEP), 1,83 year of Pay Out Time (POTb), 44,66%, of Return on Investment (ROIb), and 34,38% of Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR).
