Periodontitis is a chronic periodontal tissue inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria such as Treponema denticola. Virulence factors of Treponema denticola increase the progression of periodontitis. Gama Melon Parfum (GMP) is a superior cultivar developed by Universitas Gadjah Mada that has antibacterial properties and contains flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, cucurbitacin B, and phenols. This study aims to determine the antibacterial effect of GMP extract (Cucumis melo L. 'cv' GMP) against Treponema denticola bacteria.
The rind and flesh of GMP melon (Cucumis melo L. 'cv' GMP) were extracted using maceration technique and antibacterial effect tested by dilution technique. This research was using seven tubes, positive control tube of 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, negative control tube of aquades, treatment tube of GMP melon extract concentration 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.125%. Treponema denticola bacteria were inoculated in each tube then incubated for 24 hours. Post-incubation turbidity was measured using spectrophotometer in nanometer (nm). Repetition was done four times. The analysis of the research results used the One-way ANOVA test and LSD Post-hoc test.
The results of the study showed the average turbidity in the test tubes in order from smallest to largest, namely positive control, treatment concentration 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.125% with no inhibition in the negative control group. All treatment groups showed significant inhibition (p<0>Treponema denticola. This study concluded that the growth of Treponema denticola bacteria is inhibited by GMP melon extract, with the most effective concentration in this study being identified as 50%.
