In the shell and tube heat exchanger design concept, the inlet temperature and outlet temperature of the shell side and tube side are known and by making assumptions in determining the overall heat change coefficient value, sizing of the heat exchanger can be carried out. However, in this research, the sizing of the heat exchanger has been obtained, but there are changes in the mass flow rate values on the shell side and tube side so that the outlet temperature values on the shell side and tube side will be different. Therefore, in this research will design and constuct a shell and tube heat exchanger with a single segmental baffle based on TEMA standards and carry out experiments to obtain the outlet temperature values for the shell side and tube side, so after obtaining these two values, we can analyze the thermal performance of the heat exchanger.
In this research, thermal calculations use two methods, namely the Kern method and the Bell method. Furthermore, the calculation results from the two methods are compared with the results of thermal calculations based on experimental results. In addition, the experiments in this study used three variations of the shell side mass flow rate to analyze the effectof changes in the shell side mass flow rate on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger.
From the results of the experiments that have been carried out, the overall heat transfer coefficient using the Bell method, produce more accurate results than using the Kern method calculations, but for the calculation of pressure drop, calculations using the Kern method produce more accurate results than using the Bell method. Meanwhile, the effect of variations in the mass flow rate on the shell side on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger is that the larger the mass flow rate on the shell side, the heat transfer coefficient value increases. This is directly proportional to the increase in the NTU value, effectiveness value, and also the pressure drop value.
