The Syntactic Forms and Pragmatic Functions of Questions Used by Enola in the Movie Series Enola Holmes (2020 and 2022)

Questions can have many functions beyond simply seeking information. These various functions attached to the questions can depend on the context of the conversation. This research examines the syntactic forms and pragmatic functions of questions used by Enola Holmes when investigating cases in the movie series Enola Holmes (2020 and 2022), referring to the theory of direct and indirect speech acts by Yule (1996), and the various forms of questions and the 35 pragmatic functions of questions proposed by Fareh and Moussa (2008). The data used in this research are all types of questions, encompassing Yes/No and WH questions in standard and nonstandard structures. Additionally, the analysis considers other factors, such as conversational context, intonation, and nonverbal cues, to identify questions. The results show that 106 questions were identified, consisting of 58 WH questions (55%) and 48 Yes/No questions (45%). In terms of question structures, Enola predominantly employed standard structures with 69 occurrences compared to nonstandard structures, which appeared 37 times. Furthermore, all types of speech acts employed by Enola when asking questions, both direct and indirect, were used to fulfill 13 different pragmatic functions, with information seeking to be the most frequently used question function, accounting for 54 occurrences (50.94%). This present research concludes that Enola’s preferences for certain forms and functions are influenced by communicative purposes and expected responses.

Pertanyaan dapat mempunyai banyak fungsi lebih dari sekedar mencari informasi. Berbagai fungsi yang melekat pada pertanyaan ini dapat bergantung pada konteks percakapan. Penelitian ini mengkaji bentuk-bentuk sintaksis dan fungsi pragmatis pertanyaan yang digunakan Enola Holmes ketika menyelidiki kasus dalam seri film Enola Holmes (2020 dan 2022), mengacu pada teori tindak tutur langsung dan tidak langsung Yule (1996), serta berbagai bentuknya. pertanyaan dan 35 fungsi pragmatis pertanyaan yang dikemukakan oleh Fareh dan Moussa (2008). Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh jenis pertanyaan, meliputi pertanyaan Ya/Tidak dan WH dalam struktur standar dan tidak standar. Selain itu, analisis ini juga mempertimbangkan faktor-faktor lain, seperti konteks percakapan, intonasi, dan isyarat nonverbal, untuk mengidentifikasi pertanyaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teridentifikasi 106 pertanyaan yang terdiri dari 58 pertanyaan WH (55%) dan 48 pertanyaan Ya/Tidak (45%). Dari segi struktur pertanyaan, Enola lebih banyak menggunakan struktur standar dengan 69 kemunculan dibandingkan dengan struktur tidak standar yang muncul sebanyak 37 kali. Selain itu, semua jenis tindak tutur yang digunakan Enola ketika mengajukan pertanyaan, baik langsung maupun tidak langsung, digunakan untuk memenuhi 13 fungsi pragmatis yang berbeda, dengan pencarian informasi menjadi fungsi pertanyaan yang paling sering digunakan, sebanyak 54 kemunculan (50,94%). Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa preferensi Enola terhadap bentuk dan fungsi tertentu dipengaruhi oleh tujuan komunikatif dan respons yang diharapkan.
