The imbalance in demand and supply of highly educated workers can cause problems, namely vertical mismatch. Vertical mismatch is a job obtained by someone who has higher or lower educational requirements than required. The research objectives are as follows: 1). Knowing the trend of vertical mismatch in job types and education levels in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province in 2019-2021. 2). Knowing the vertical mismatch of types of work and level of education for each district/city in Yogyakarta Special Region Province in 2021. 3). To find out the characteristics of workers who experience a vertical mismatch in type of work and level of education in Yogyakarta Special Region Province in 2021 according to gender, age group, and migrant-non-migrant status.
The data used is raw Sakernas data (National Labor Force Survey) August 2019-2021. The data used in this research is working population data. Vertical mismatch is known from cross tabulations between main occupation and education level. Cross-tabulation data on high-skill jobs with primary-secondary education and low-skill jobs with higher education were identified as vertical mismatch. Data is processed using trends, spatial patterns using maps, and cross tabulations on vertical mismatch characteristics. Data analysis was carried out quantitatively descriptively.
The results of the research are as follows: 1). Vertical mismatch workforce has an increasing trend during 2019-2021. 2). The high class vertical mismatch workforce in 2021 is in Yogyakarta City, the medium class is in Kulon Progo, Bantul and Sleman Regencies, and the low class is in Gunungkidul Regency. 3). Labor vertical mismatch according to its characteristics in 2021 is higher for male workers than female, higher for the 30-34 year age group, and higher for migrant workers than non-migrant workers. Policy suggestions that can be implemented are creating high-skilled jobs in Kulon Progo, Bantul, Sleman, and Yogyakarta City as well as improving the quality of education in Bantul and Gunungkidul Regencies.
