Peralihan antara bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia merupakan hal yang biasa terjadi, namun hal ini dapat menimbulkan penilaian yang kurang baik terhadap penuturnya. Untuk mendalami hal tersebut, penelitian terhadap penggunaan bahasa Inggris yang berlebihan dalam tulisan berita berbahasa Indonesia dan hubungannya dengan identitas wartawan ini dilakukan. Dengan menggunakan desain kualitatif deskriptif, penelitian ini membahas hubungan antara alih kode ke bahasa Inggris yang ditulis dalam liputan berita tentang Ferdy Sambo, dan identitas jurnalis akun Twitter @catchmeupid. Tesis ini meneliti 1) tipe-tipe pembentukan alih kode, 2) fungsi alih kode, dan 3) jenis-jenis identitas yang ingin ditampilkan oleh para jurnalis. Data untuk alih kode dikumpulkan melalui teknik observasi dan dokumentasi, dengan data yang diambil dari 31 berita tentang kasus pembunuhan yang dilakukan oleh Ferdy Sambo. Data tersebut berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 1354 contoh alih kode ke bahasa Inggris yang muncul pada judul, teras berita, dan tubuh berita. Tipe-tipe formasi diklasifikasikan berdasarkan kerangka kerja yang diusulkan oleh McArthur & McArthur (2005). Ditemukan bahwa proses yang menonjol dari jenis jenis alih kode adalah alih kode intra-sentensial (822 contoh), alih kode inter-sentensial (203contoh), alih kode tag (203 contoh), dan alih kode intra-kata (126 contoh). Lebih lanjut, fungsi alih kode diteliti dengan menggunakan gagasan yang ditawarkan oleh Appel & Muysken (2005), yang mengungkapkan penggunaan alih kode bahasa Inggris untuk melayani fungsi referensial (55,3%), fungsi direktif (19,3%), fungsi ekspresif (14,8%), fungsi fatis (6,6%), fungsi metalinguistik (3,2%), dan fungsi puitis (0,8%). Mengenai identitas, teori kekhasan optimal dari Brewer (2012) menjadi dasar untuk meneliti identitas jurnalis. Hasilnya, @catchmeupid menunjukkan beberapa identitas berdasarkan latar belakang sosial para jurnalis, yang meliputi komunitas bahasa, profesi, kewarganegaraan, dan usia. Hasil penelitian lebih lanjut menunjukkan bahwa peralihan ke bahasa Inggris oleh para jurnalis @catchmeupid merupakan pilihan yang disengaja untuk mendukung identitas mereka dalam rangka menarik minat calon pembaca.

Switching between English and Indonesian is a common practice, but it can lead to unfavorable judgments towards the speakers. To delve into it, this study is conducted on the exaggerated use of English in Indonesian written news posts and its association with journalists’ identities. Carrying out a descriptive qualitative design, this study discusses the relationship between code-switching to English written in the news coverage of Ferdy Sambo, and the identities of the journalists of the Twitter account @catchmeupid. This thesis examines 1) the formation types of code-switching, 2) the functions of code-switching, and 3) the kinds of identities the journalists want to portray. The data for the code-switching were collected through observation and documentation techniques, with data taken from 31 news posts about a murder case committed by Ferdy Sambo. The data were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The results revealed that 1354 instances of code-switching to English appeared in the news headlines, headings, and bodies. The formation types were classified based on the framework McArthur & McArthur (2005) proposed. It was discovered that the salient processes of code-switching types are intra-sentential switching (822 instances), inter-sentential switching (203 instances), tag switching (203 instances), and intra-word switching (126 instances). Moreover, the functions for code-switching were examined using the notion offered by Appel & Muysken (2005), which disclosed the usage of code-switching to English to serve referential functions (55.3%), directive functions (19.3%), expressive functions (14.8%), phatic functions (6.6%), metalinguistic functions (3.2%), and poetic functions (0.8%). Regarding identities, the optimal distinctiveness theory by Brewer (2012) becomes the basis for scrutinizing the journalists’ identities. The result was that @catchmeupid exhibits multiple identities based on journalists’ social backgrounds, which include their linguistic community, profession, nationality, and age. The results further indicate that the switch to English by @catchmeupid journalists is a deliberate choice to support their identities in order to appeal to their potential readers.
