Refusal Strategies in the Three Superhero Movies: The Old Guard, Avengers "Endgame", and Spiderman "No Way Home"

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki salah satu jenis tindak tutur yaitu strategi penolakan, dalam film Avengers “Endgame”, The Old Guard, dan Spiderman “No Way Home”. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari naskah film yang dicocokkan dengan ungkapan-ungkapan yang diucapkan oleh para karakter dalam ketiga film tersebut. Di dalam penelitian ini ditemukan sebanyak 181 strategi penolakan yang muncul dan digunakan oleh para karakter dalam ketiga film. Film Avengers “Endgame” memiliki strategi penolakan terbanyak dengan 81 kali yang terbagi menjadi 50 penolakan langsung, 31 penolakan tidak langsung. Kemudian disusul oleh Spiderman “No Way Home” yang memiliki 78 strategi penolakan dalam film tersebut yang terbagi menjadi 52 penolakan langsung, 26 penolakan tidak langsung. Selanjutnya The Old Guard dengan 22 kali strategi penolakan yang tersebar menjadi 14 penolakan langsung, 8 penolakan tidak langsung, dan tidak ada penolakan tambahan yang muncul di film ini. 

This research aims to investigate one of the speech acts which is refusal strategy, in the movies, Avengers “Endgame”, The Old Guard, and Spiderman “No Way Home”. The data used in this research were collected from the scripts of each movie which matched with the utterances used by the characters in the movies. Then the data were analyzed using Felix-Brasdefer’s theory. This research uncovered a total of 181 refusal strategies that appeared and were used by the characters in the three movies. The movie Avengers “Endgame” has the most refusal strategies with 81 times which include 50 direct refusals, 31 indirect refusals. Then followed by Spiderman “No Way Home” which has 78 refusal strategies in the movie, which include 52 direct refusals, 26 indirect refusals. Subsequently, The Old Guard with 22 refusal strategies, which include 14 direct refusals, 8 indirect refusals, and no adjunct refusal that appears in this movie.
