The Changes of Religiosity among Students in Inter-religious Study Program

Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS) atau Studi Agama dan Lintas Budaya Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) merupakan program magister di mana para mahasiswa dari berbagai keyakinan bertemu untuk berbagi, mendengarkan dan merasakan keberagaman tanpa ketegangan. Hal ini menuntun mahasiswa pada fase memikirkan dan mempertanyakan ulang nilai-nilai dan idelogi yang mereka pegang. Dalam prosesnya, religiusitas dan sikap mereka terpengaruhi. Tesis ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk perubahan religiusitas dan sikap mahasiswa serta aspek-aspek CRCS UGM yang berkontribusi terhadap perubahan mahasiswa tersebut. Ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan model pengambilan sampel purposive supaya agama informan lebih variatif. 20 informan diambil dari enam angkatan mahasiswa studi Agama dan Lintas Budaya Universitas Gadjah Mada: 2014, 2015, 2017, 2021, dan 2022. Wawancara mendalam dilaksanakan untuk memperoleh data. Teori Glock dan Stark, serta Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) digunakan sebagai teori utama, sementara Thematic Analysys (TA) digunakan untuk tematisasi data. Peneliti menemukan tiga aspek CRCS UGM yang mempengaruhi religiusitas dan sikap mahasiswa. Yang pertama adalah kelas dan bahan bacaan (di kelas tersebut). Yang kedua adalah lingkungan CRCS UGM yang berlokasi di Yogyakarta. Dan yang terakhir adalah program karyawisata. Bentuk perubahan religiusitas yang terjadi pada mahasiswa adalah: fluktuasi ritual, transformasi penghayatan, perluasan makna religusitas dan ritual lintas-agama. Sementara perubahan sikap meraka adalah: penerimaan terhadap golongan lain, memahami akulturasi, menghindari penghakiman dini dan pembentukan komunitas lintas-agama. Akan tetapi, beberapa mahasiswa mengklaim bahwa CRCS UGM tidak sama sekali mempengaruhi religiusitas dan sikap mereka. Pengaruhnya datang dari faktor eksternal semisal pandemi Covid-19, kebiasaan S1, pesantren, keluarga atau daerah yang pluralis, komunitas atau asosiasi dan kedewasaan mereka sendiri. Mahasiswa-mahasiswa ini menempatkan CRCS UGM hanya sebagai alat atau lokasi untuk berproses.

Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS) Gadjah Mada University is the master program where students from the various beliefs meet to share, listen and sense the diversity without any tension. It brings every student to a journey of re-thinking the “values” that they believe previously and re-questioning the ideology that they hold so far. While sensing those experiences, their religiosity and behavior of mostly affected. This thesis aims to describe the form of religiosity and behavioral changes among student and the aspects of CRCS UGM that contribute to the changes. It uses qualitative approach and maintains purposive sampling, to have the variation of religions. Twenty informants are taken from six batches: 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2022. The theories of Glock and Stark, Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) are used as the main theory, while Thematic Analysis (TA) for theming the data. The research found three aspects of CRCS UGM that affects students’ religiosity and behavior. The first is the class and reading list. The second is the circle of CRCS UGM which is located in Yogyakarta. The last is field trip program. Religiosity changes that occur among students are: ritual fluctuation, transformation of sense, expanding the meaning of religiosity, self-positioning, and cross-rituals. While the changes of behavior are: accepting other group, understanding acculturation, avoiding direct judgment, establishing and developing inter-religious community. However, several students claimed that CRCS UGM have no impact on their religiosity and behavior. They get the influence from external factors such as Covid-19 pandemic, bachelor habit, pesantren effect, pluralist family or region, community or association and their own maturity. These students just put CRCS UGM as the tool or location of process.
