Freedom of Expression on Racism, Gender and Sexuality in Rich Brian and NIKI’S Selected Songs

Pengaruh budaya Amerika di negara lain juga dapat ditemukan di Indonesia. Budaya Amerika membawa keragaman genre dalam perkembangan musik. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti ingin melihat pengaruh budaya Amerika terhadap musisi Indonesia. Peneliti menggunakan lagu-lagu pilihan dari Rich Brian dan NIKI sebagai obyek penelitian. Mereka dipilih sebagai objek karena peneliti ingin melihat isu dan pesan yang ingin mereka sampaikan melalui lagu menggunakan lirik. Selain itu, peneliti menggunakan semiotika dari Roland Barthes untuk melihat isu dan pesan yang dapat dilihat dari lagu-lagu terpilih milik Rich Brian dan NIKI. Teori hegemoni oleh Antonio Gramsci juga digunakan oleh para peneliti untuk melihat bagaimana Rich Brian dan NIKI dipengaruhi oleh budaya Amerika. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bukti isu rasisme dan seksualitas yang coba disampaikan oleh Rich Brian dan NIKI dalam lirik lagu-lagunya. Mereka mendapatkan pengaruh Budaya Amerika dari pengalaman yang mereka dapatkan ketika berada di Amerika dan dari sejarah dan cerita orang Amerika. Menggunakan teori hegemoni, peneliti mengkaji latar belakang cerita dan wawancara mereka yang digunakan sebagai bukti tambahan tentang bagaimana budaya Amerika memengaruhi Rich Brian dan NIKI serta pendapat mereka tentang rasisme dan seksualitas.
The influence of American culture in other
countries can also be found in Indonesia. It brings the diversity of genres in
the development of music. In this study, the researcher wants to see the
influence of American culture on Indonesian musicians. The researcher used Rich
Brian and NIKI’s selected songs as research objects. They are chosen as objects
because the researcher wants to see the issues and messages they are trying to
deliver through the song using the lyrics. In addition, the researcher uses
semiotics by Roland Barthes to see the issues and messages that can be seen
from the selected Rich Brian and NIKI’s songs. The theory of hegemony by
Antonio Gramsci is also used by the researcher to see how Rich Brian and NIKI
are influenced by American culture. Based on the results of this study, the
researcher found evidence of racism issues and sexuality that Rich Brian and
NIKI try to deliver in the lyrics of the songs. They get the influence of
American Culture from the experiences they get when they are in America and
from the history and story of Americans. Using the theory of hegemony, the
researcher examines their background stories and interviews that are used as
additional evidence of how American culture influences Rich Brian and NIKI and
their opinions about racism and sexuality.
