Cyberpunk Subversion on Bruce Sterling's Islands in the Net

Tesis sarjana ini membahas penulisan Bruce Sterling untuk menumbangkan ekspektasi genre cyberpunk dalam karyanya Islands in the Net. Karya tulis ini menggunakan teori ekspresif untuk menganalisa novel tersebut berdasarkan kehidupan Bruce Sterling sendiri yang mengarungi ide-ide konsumerisme dalam karya-karya dan kegiatan aktivisnya. Novel ini membahas konsumerisme yang adalah bagian terkemuka dalam percakapan cyberpunk dalam bentuk realitas hiper. Namun, novel ini mengambil ;angkah mundur dalam formula penulisan cyberpunk yang dianggap menjadi pendahuluian genre tersebut. Langkah inilah yang kemudian disimpulkan menjadi penumbangan genre, dimana dirasa ada kebutuhan untuk mejelaskan bagaimana hal-hal dalam genre tersebut dapat terjadi. Langkah-langkah yang diambil Sterling ini merupakan buah dari pandangannya tentang relasi pembaca dengan karya-karya cyberpunk sebagai subjek konsumerismenya.

This undergraduate thesis discusses Bruce Sterling's writing in the attempt to subvert the cyberpunk genre through his work Islands in the Net. This paper implements the expressive approach to analyze the novel based on the real-life experiences of Bruce Sterling who tackles the idea of consumerism in many of his works and activism. This novel engages consumerism, which is a prominent discourse surrounding cyberpunk works, in its forms within hyper-reality . However, it takes several steps backward on the formula used in cyberpunk world-building, which can be regarded as a prelude to this sub-genre of science-fiction. This particular step is what then concluded to be the subversion of the genre, in which it is needed to be understood of how it came to be. These steps taken by Sterling is the result of his view on the relationship of the reader with cyberpunk works as its subject of consumerism.
