This study explores the dynamics of intercultural communication between Niels Evens, a Belgian business owner, and his Indonesian workers in the Murianto Workshop in Jepara, Central Java. Drawing upon the Communication Accommodation Theory by Giles and Coupland and the Conversational Constraints Theory by Kim, the study discusses the interplay of cultural adaptation and communication strategies employed by Niels Evens within this cross-cultural context. The objective of this study is to understand intercultural communication in Murianto Workshop in Jepara, Central Java using the Communication Accommodation Theory and Conversational Constraints Theory. It also identifies the constraints during the communication between the owner and workers of Murianto Workshop. Data for this research were gathered through a semi-structured interview conducted with Niels Evens and presented qualitative descriptively.
The finding shows that Niels’s effort to adapt and understand the local culture can be called convergence from the Communication Accommodation Theory by Giles and Coupland. Convergence is a communication strategy when a person uses the same language to the people they are talking to and also adapts to the host culture. This adaptation enables him to effectively communicate with his workers, despite the necessary shift from a direct, European communication style to the more indirect Indonesian approach. Although many of his actions reflect collectivist tendencies, he deliberately establishes boundaries with his workers to maintain a professional work environment. From the Conversational Constraints Theory by Kim, it can be concluded that the constraints are only two out of five for Niels, which is concerned for clarity and effectiveness. These constraints he faced are related to the change of communication strategy from direct to indirect approach, which is his constraint in adapting to the local culture.
