Pragmatic Functions of Questions Found in TV Series Sex Education

Kita telah merasakan pentingnya pertanyaan dari penggunaannya 

setiap hari di kehidupan manusia terlebih di percakapan yang terjadi setiap 

hari tanpa berhenti. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan ini memegang bagian penting 

di pembelajaran linguistik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi 

bentuk sintaks dari kalimat tanya disusul dengan fungsi pragmatiknya. 

Serial televisi berjudul Sex Education menjadi sumber utama dari penelitian 

ini. Kalimat-kalimat tanya, reaksi-reaksi dari interlocutor dan konteks 

menjadi data utama. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan bahwa: dari total 

674 kalimat-kalimat tanya, ada 399 (51%) pertanyaan yes/no dan 275 

(49%) pertanyaan kalimat-WH. Bentuk pertanyaan dengan kata ‘what’ 

mendominasi hasil penelitian. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang terdapat di 

penelitian ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan 30 fungsi pragmatic dengan 

fungsi mencari dan meminta informasi menjadi fungsi dengan jumlah yang 

paling banyak ditemukan di data, dengan hasil sejumlah 262 data yang 

ditemukan dan mencapai 38.8%. Angka yang tinggi tersebut bisa terjadi 

karena latar budaya dan demografi dari karakter-karakter yang muda.

Wee already feel the importance of questions by the usage of them every day 

in human society especially in the conversations that conducted almost without 

stopping in daily life. Questions hold a crucial part in the study of linguistics. This 

paper has the aim to inspect the syntactic forms of interrogatives sentences followed 

by pragmatic functions. A TV Series Sex Education was used as the source of data. 

The interrogative sentences, the responses of the interlocutor and the context were

the main data. The findings of this research were; The total of 674 question

sentences were obtained, with detail of 399 (51%) yes/no questions and 275 (49%) 

WH questions. The form of question with the word ‘what’ in it dominates the result. 

The questions listed in this research were used to serve 30 pragmatic functions with 

seeking and requesting information being the most function being used in the data,

resulting in 262 data found while reaching the percentage of 38.8%. The high 

number of specific results mentioned before might be caused by the cultural setting 

and the demography of young characters.
