Analisis Permasalahan Kegagalan Elbow Air Induction Unit Liebherr T282B Pada Mesin Diesel MTU Series 20V4000

One unit of Liebherr T282B haul truck owned by PT Kaltim Prima Coal experienced an engine blow-by in the MTU 20V4000 Diesel engine. The component that failed was the elbow air induction. Elbow air induction is a component in the air intake system that directs the airflow from the outside to the engine's air intake system. The damage to the elbow air induction resulted in the ingress of external particles such as dust and sand, leading to indications of engine blow-by. This study analyses the causes of failure in elbow air induction. The research methods include oil sampling for analysis, post-overhaul component observation, and load box testing simulation. Oil sampling involves analysing oil samples in the laboratory to determine wear metal content and contamination. Post-overhaul component observation is conducted to examine the damage in the Diesel engine. Load box testing simulation simulates cracks and vacuum conditions in the elbow air induction using three samples of elbow air induction. The research results indicate that the leading cause of failure in elbow air induction is the presence of manufacturing defects in the component and human eror. This is evidenced by the pressure, temperature, and engine RPM changes that accelerate cracking and vacuum formation in the elbow air induction. This study provides a further understanding of the issues related to elbow air induction. It highlights the importance of prevention and proper maintenance to ensure the performance of the Diesel engine.
