Sundanese speakers who learn English as a second, third, or subsequent language sometimes have difficulties because the rules of use of English are not the same as Sundanese. One of the English practices that is difficult for Sundanese speakers is to determine the use of the pronouns of the English first personal pronoun. Therefore, this study is conducted to show the variants of the English and Sundanese first personal pronouns and how the pronouns are used, as well as introducing similarities and differences in the rules of using the pronouns of the English and Sundanese first personal pronoun. In practical terms, this research is expected to be a benchmark in understanding the use of English first personal pronoun for Sundanese speakers and vice versa.
Research data in the form of variants of the first personal pronoun and sentences in English containing the pronoun of the first persona are collected through song lyrics, online daily news, speech transcripts, speeches on YouTube, and posts on Instagram, while data in Sundanese is collected through Sundanese daily conversation books, Sundanese theory books, and ten Manglé magazines published in 2021-2022. This research is conducted by describing, juxtaposing, then contrasting between the English and the Sundanese first personal pronouns. The results show that the use of English first personal pronoun varies based on grammatical function, but could be used by everyone when talking to anyone without violating manners. It is completely different from the use of the Sundanese first personal pronoun which is very concerned about who the opponent is and what his/her mood is when producing sentences.
