Resiliensi Perempuan Sandwich Generation

Fenomena extended family serta tatanan sosial yang berkembang di masyarakat memposisikan perempuan dewasa dalam keluarga menjadi seorang caregiver dari orang tuanya sekaligus anaknya, yang kemudian memasukkan mereka kedalam kelompok sandwich generation. Serangkaian tanggung jawab serta tuntutan yang mereka miliki dapat berakibat pada peningkatan stres yang dialamu. Apabila stres ini tidak dapat dikelola dengan tepat oleh individu, maka stres akan berdampak buruk pada berbagai aspek dalam diri individu. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi perempuan sandwich generation untuk mengembangkan resiliensi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah empat perempuan sandwich generation dengan rentang umur 31 hingga 45 tahun. Semua partisipan berdomisili di DKI Jakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa resiliensi perempuan sandwich generation ditandai dengan produktivitas dan kemampuan untuk menyelesaikan masalah serta menangani dampak negatif yang dialami. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologis deskriptif dengan metode wawancara untuk mengeksplorasi resiliensi perempuan sandwich generation serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhinya. Ada pun faktor protektif resiliensi perempuan sandwich generation meliputi kemampuan kognitif, sifat individu, motivasi, penerimaan, serta dukungan sosial.

The phenomenon of extended family plus social order in society position adult women in the family as caregivers of their parents and children, which then includes them in the sandwich generation population. The set of responsibilities and demands put on their shoulder result in increased stress experienced. If this stress isn’t managed properly, then it will have a negative impact on various aspects of the individual. Therefore, it is important for sandwich generation women to develop resilience. The participants of this study are four sandwich generation women whose age between 31 to 45 years old. All participants live in DKI Jakarta. The findings of this study show that the resilience of sandwich generation women is characterized by productivity and the ability to solve problems as well as deal with negative impacts of their roles. This study uses a descriptive phenomenological approach by interview method to explore the resilience of sandwich generation women and the factors that influence it. There are also protective factors of resilience of sandwich generation women including cognitive abilities, individual trait, motivation, acceptance and social support.
