Ultrasonography (USG) is a technology that has been widely used as an imaging instrument. It is used because it does not damage the tissue and is easy to use on various objects, both hard and soft tissues. However, the main obstacle to ultrasound images is their poor quality. The poor quality of ultrasound images can be caused by various factors or artifacts, including reverberation, image reflection, the formation of acoustic shadows, and speckle noise. Among them, speckle noise is the biggest factor affecting the poor quality of ultrasound images, so a method is needed to reduce speckle noise. The most commonly used speckle noise reduction method is the Median Filter. The median filter is used to improve the quality of ultrasound images based on image quality parameters. Image quality parameters used as a reference for measured image quality are Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR). In the image processing process, ImageJ software is used, which already provides the median filter algorithm along with the parameters used in this study.
In this study, the Median Filter method was used on ImageJ to reduce the ultrasound image of formalin mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis). Based on the results of the analysis of ultrasound image quality parameters on formalin-forminated fish, it was found that the greater the formalin concentration, the higher the image brightness level. This affects the performance of the median filter where based on the selected parameters, this method is most effectively applied to ultrasound images of fish meat with 80% formalin concentration which has the highest and best image brightness. It can be concluded that the concentration of formalin sufficiently affects the results of the ultrasound image and the speckle noise reduction method applied to the image.
