Apologies Produced by Male and Female Characters in Sense8 TV Series

Skripsi ini menyelidiki tren dan preferensi strategi permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh karakter pria dan wanita dalam musim pertama serial TV fiksi ilmiah Amerika Sense8 serta fungsi sosial permintaan maaf tersebut. Data diperoleh dari serial TV. Ucapan yang mengandung permintaan maaf dikumpulkan dan didokumentasikan dengan jenis kelamin karakter serta cap waktu yang disediakan di subtitle. Permintaan maaf tersebut kemudian diklasifikasi sesuai keterusterangannya menggunakan taksonomi Blum-Kulka dan Olshtain (1984). Fungsi sosial dari permintaan maaf tersebut diidentifikasi menggunakan teori Norrick (1978). Hasil penelitian mengindikasikan bahwa karakter pria tidak memiliki preferensi strategi permintaan maaf yang signifikan berdasarkan keterusterangannya sedangkan karakter wanita terlebih memilih permintaan maaf langsung. Selain itu, Implicating Contrition adalah fungsi sosial yang sering ditemukan di permintaan maaf karakter pria sedangkan Showing Good Manners adalah fungsi sosial yang paling sering digunakan karakter wanita. 

This study examines the trend and preferences of apology strategies used by the male and female characters in the first season of the American sci-fi TV series Sense8 along with the social functions of the apologies. The data were obtained from the TV series. The utterances containing apologies were collected and documented along with the gender of the speakers and the time stamps provided by the subtitle. The apology utterances were then classified based on their directness according to Blum-Kulka and Olshtain's (1984) taxonomy to identify the strategy. The social functions of the apology were identified using Norrick's (1978) theory. The results indicate that the male characters do not have a significant preference for apology strategies in terms of their directness, while the female characters vastly prefer direct apology strategies. Furthermore, Implicating Contrition is a prevalent social function of the male characters' apologies, whereas Showing Good Manners is the female characters' most frequently used social function.
