Medication errors are a common occurrence, but still receive little attention from the government. The prescribing stage is a crucial stage and contributes the highest error rate compared to other stages. An intervention that can be done to minimise the occurrence of medication errors is to implement an electronic prescription system. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of electronic prescriptions in an effort to minimise the potential incidence of medication errors at the prescibing stage.
This study is descriptive in which data collection was carried out retrospectively from the electronic and non-electronic prescription groups at the Mojoanyar Health Centre in the period December 2022 - January 2023 and February - March 2021. The data collected were studied quantitatively using the chi-square analysis method to determine the presence of medication errors at the prescribing stage. The data results are presented in descriptive text.
Incomplete prescription writing was found to be higher in non-electronic prescriptions than electronic prescriptions with a statistically significant OR of 0.72 (95% CI: 0.73-1.03) (p=0.01). Illegible writing was only found in 92 (7.22%) prescriptions in non-electronic prescriptions, which was statistically significant. The risk of drug interactions and other errors (inappropriate drug selection, multiple drugs and unusual doses) were not reduced by electronic prescribing. Electronic prescribing plays a role in minimising prescribing errors mainly due to the writing process while decision-making needs additional support systems to improve medication safety.
