The research for utilizing durian seed and prevent environmental pollution caused by rhodamine B dyes were conducted. The stages of the research began with preparation and characterization of TiO2/durian seed activated carbon as well as testing the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dyes under UV light. Activated carbon from durian seed (KA-BD) was synthesized by the pyrolysis method and then chemically activated using 0.1M KOH solution. The TiO2/KA-BD composite was synthesized by sonication method at a mass ratio of TiO2 to durian seed activated carbon = 5:1. The resulting TiO2/KA-BD composite was then characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDX. Activity tests to reduce the concentration of rhodamine B by TiO2/KA-BD were carried out with variations in mass, irradiation time, and pH of the solution. The concentration of rhodamine B by TiO2/KA-BD was determined by visible spectrophotometry method.
The results of the characterization with the FTIR tool showed that there was not a chemical bond between the activated carbon of the durian seed and TiO2. Based on XRD data, the TiO2/KA-BD composite formed has an average crystal size of 22.49 nm. The results of characterization with SEM-EDX show that the TiO2/KA-BD composite has a relatively uniform pore shape with TiO2 particles dispersed into the pores of the durian seed activated carbon. Under optimum conditions, namely mass 150 mg, time 90 min, and pH 9, the TiO2/KA-BD composite was able to degrade 10 ppm of rhodamine B with a higher degradation effectiveness than TiO2 without modification of 99.72%.
