Because of obligation to made research in a management unit, so Kelompok Tani "Ngudi Lestari'' was chosen as object of research. This research's purpose was to appraise the sustainability of social function level i???? community forest management with analysis and recommendation that been needed for perfecting. Tools that been used in this research were criteria and indicator for sustainability of social function on "Certification System on Sustainable Community Based Forest Management" that has been promoted by LEI. Every indicator - there were ten indicators that been grouped in four main criteria - was valued in qualitative scale like good (G), enough (E), or bad (B). Sustainability of social function level was proportion how much indicators in good scale, enough, or bad. According to the result of this research, it was got that sustainability of social function level for community forest Kelompok Tani "Ngudi Lestari" was good because it had fulfilled its minimum condition, with total of value G > 50% (lt was 60%), value E = 20%, and value B < 25% (only 20%). But, because of value G only 60%, many recommendations still possible to be given for perfecting its sustainability of social function level. Hutan rakyat diartikan sebagai hutan yru1g dibangun secara swadaya oleh masyarkat ditujukan untuk menghasilkan kayu atau komoditas ikutannya yang secara ekonomis bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pendapatan dan kesejahteraan masyarakat. Jika dikaitkan dengan model pengelolaan hutan yru1g ada di Indonesia, maka hutan rakyat merupakan salah satu bagian yang menunjang struktur tegaknya konsep Pengelolaan Rutan Berbasis Masyarakat (PHBM). Lembaga Ekolobel Indonesia (LEI) membagi PHBM-Lestari dalam tiga elemen yaitu kelestarian fungsi produksi, kelestarian fungsi ekologi, dan kelestarian fungsi sosial. Penelitian ini hanya difokuskan pada aspek kelestarian fungsi sosiaJ saja. Penelitian ini dilaksankan di Desa Hargomulyo, Kecamatan Kokap, Kabupaten Kulon Progo. Disebabkan keharusan melakukan penilaian pada satu unit manajemen, maka dipilih Kelompok Tani "Ngudi Lestari" di Dukuh Kadigunung sebagai obyek penelitian. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menilai derajat kelestariru1 fungsi sosial pengelolan hutan rak-yat disertai dengan analisis dan rekomendasi yang diperlukan untuk penyempumaannya. Perangkat yang digunakan dalam penilaian adalah kriteria dan indikator kelestarian fungsi sosial pada "Sistem Sertifikasi Pengelolaan Rutan Berbasis Masyarakat Lestari" yang diperkenalkan oleh LEI. Masing-masing indikator dinilai dalam skala kualitatif apakah baik (B), cukup (C), atau jelek (J). Derajat kelestarian fungsi sosial merupakan proporsi berapa indikator berskala baik, cukup, atau jelek. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapati derajat kelestarian fungsi sosial hutan rakyat Kelompok Tani "Ngudi Lestari" adalah baik karena sudah memenuhi persyaratan minimumnya, dengan jumlah nilai B > 50% (besarnya 60%), nilai C = 20%, dan nilai J < 25% (hanya 20%). Namun demikian, disebabkan nilai B hanya 60%, maka beberapa rekomendasi masih dimungkinkan untuk diberikan guna penyempumaan derajat kelestarian fungsi sosialnya.
