Wound is damage to the integrity or function of tissue in the body. One of the wound dressings that is often used is the hydrogel wound dressing. Hydrogel has the ability to retain moisture and minimize wound exudate accumulation, due to its ability to absorb fluid and swell. Hydrogel can also function as a drug delivery agent to the wound or tissues in the body. The aim of this study was to determine the most optimal concentration of kappa-carrageenan and chitosan in producing hydrogel for wound dressings.
The optimum formula was determined based on the simplex lattice design method using Design Expert® 13 software with varying concentrations of kappa-carrageenan and chitosan. The parameters used for optimization are swelling ratio, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and film degradation.
The optimum hydrogel formula has concentration of 1.5% kappa-carrageenan and 0.5% chitosan. Variation of kappa-carrageenan and chitosan concentrations had an effect on the value of the swelling ratio and film degradation and had no effect on the water vapor transmission rate of the hydrogel wound dressing. The value of the swelling ratio and degradation of the hydrogel film was lower with the dominant high concentration of kappa-carrageenan in the formula. Hydrogel with an optimum formula has a tensile strength that is suitable with the injured skin tissue. Sterilization using autoclave does not reduce the quality of the hydrogel, and increases its tensile strength.
