The Japanese business expansion in Indonesia during the colonial period fell into two categories: the non-banking business and the banking business. So far, discussions of Japanese economic expansion in Indonesia from the early 20th century until before World War II have always been associated with Japanese imperialism. This research seeks to prove that there is actually no connection between the expansion of Japanese non-banking and banking businesses in Surabaya and Japanese economic expansion in Indonesia as part of Japan's imperialist efforts in the context of Nanshin-ron. In the context of Nanshin-ron, the expansion of Japanese business to Surabaya became something that was needed because Japan was trying to find natural resources for the industrialization of its country.
What actually happened was only an economically oriented business expansion. The accusation that Japanese business expansion in Indonesia was part of imperialism was more about the concerns of the Dutch colonial government. They were worried that Japan's massive economic expansion would destabilize the Dutch colonial government in Indonesia. Therefore, subversive acts were accused of being committed against Japan. From the example of the case found in Surabaya, it can at least be shown that the expansion of Japanese non-banking and banking businesses carried out is only economically oriented, so that Japan can play a big role in the global economy by becoming the parent of all Japanese overseas businesses.
