Demand for logs in Indonesia has become a big issue due to the large number of units and capacity of the plywood and sawnwood mills (+ 100 plywood mills and about 4 times of saw mills presently working). So the heavy pressure of the mills to the forest is an unavoidable. On the other hand, conservation should always be maintained in any logging activity. In effect, logging should be designed and excuted in such a way that its maximization of timber production is constrained by certain level convironmental damage. The problem was approach by initially analyze 3 models of road spacing optimization. Variables associated with recovery of logging damage on the residual standing then inserted into the model, and their effect were analized. The area of PT inhutani II at Pulau Laut, South Kalimantan is concidered as having ca.paci ty to accomodate the study. Two 50 hectare of forest area, predominantly vegetated with Dipterocarps were cu·t with diameter limit 40 Cm and above. A 100% cruising of diameter 20 Cm and above was done prior to the logging. A study was done to stand and area damages by roads and skidding trails as caused logging oper'.3.ti,:,p,. Necessary supporting data were observed. There are 10, 100 m X 100 m plot for inventory on the damage before and after logging. Results of the research are as follows : the parameters of skidd trails planning by Matthews and Ulf Sundberg are not significant different, because Ulf Sundberg models was modification of Matthews models only. Ma.tthe1,rn introduced the Break Event Point principle and Ulf Sundberg used optimi zation.Results of Von Sagebadens model was more realistic because it had introduced the correction factor to haul road and skidding trails. The proposed model introduced the st????nd and land damage into the Von Sagebadens model. By inputting Pulau Laut data into the models, one can indicate that the proposed model tends to intensify the road spacing but it conciderably reduce the tractors in skijding the logs.
