A study on the physical and mechanical properties of sungkai wood (Peronema eone----sc 1. To make a description.and measurement of the physi­cal and mechonical properties of sungkai wood inclu­dinq : moisture content, specific gravity, shrinka­ge, compression strength, static bending strength , ehearinq strength, cleavability, tension _strength and hardness of wood and to determine their variati­on within the tree and between the stem and the branches. 2. To assess the suitability of sungkai wood 'to be used as raw material for furnitures or building. The material used for this study was a sungkai tree, age 20 years, that grows in Guntung Lua, South Kalimantan. Description and measurement of the proper­ties were carried out using standard procedures. Results of the study showed thet there was a sig­nificant dijference in specific gravity and radial shrinkage from wet to ovendry condition and from wet to air dry condition , in static bending strenqth and com­pression strength perpendicular to qrain, betweon stem wood and branch wood. On the other hand, all physical and mechanical properties of the wood showed a non sig­nificant difference between samples taken from diffe­rent parts of the stem and branch. Based on the physical and mechanical properties measured, sumgkai wood appeared to be suitable to be used as fur????iture and building materials.
