EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY IN SEED SUPPLY: A SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS OF TRCRC SEEDLINGS BUYBACK MODEL

Studi ini mengeksplorasi keberlanjutan penghidupan dari studi kasus berjudul Melibatkan Masyarakat untuk Konservasi: Program Pembibitan untuk Komunitas Jahai di Royal Belum, Malaysia, sebuah proyek konservasi multi-stakeholder berbasis masyarakat oleh Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Center (TRCRC). Ini mengeksplorasi dinamika peran masyarakat adat dalam pasokan benih untuk mendorong pemulihan ekosistem, dan kelayakan sosial-ekonomi untuk sumber daya bukan kayu menjadi mata pencaharian alternatif yang berkelanjutan. Pengumpulan data dalam studi kasus ini terutama berfokus pada data pengamatan untuk evaluasi melalui Kriteria dan Indikator (K&I) dalam Pengelolaan Hutan Lestari (Sheppard et al., 2004). Data non-observasi melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan masyarakat sasaran, suku Jahai di Royal Belum, dianalisis melalui analisis tematik, yang kemudian diintegrasikan ke dalam perencanaan hierarkis (Jeakins et al. 2004) dengan hasil evaluasi K&I, untuk mengembangkan strategi pengembangan multi-stakeholder yang berkelanjutan untuk program pembibitan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa pengembangan program pembelian kembali benih sebagai aliran pendapatan tambahan untuk pembelian kembali bibit, sambil berfokus pada peningkatan kapasitas untuk mendapatkan data suara ekologis, dapat meningkatkan indeks keberlanjutan program bibit.

The study explores the livelihood sustainability of the case study titled Engaging Communities for Conservation: Seedlings Programme for Jahai Communities in Royal Belum, Malaysia, a community-based multi-stakeholder conservation project by Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC). It explores the role dynamics of the indigenous community in seeds supply to boost ecosystem restoration, and the socio-economical feasibility for the non-timber resources matured into sustainable alternative livelihood. This data collection in this case study focuses mainly on the observational data for evaluation through the Criteria and Indicator (C&I) in Sustainable Forest Management (Sheppard et al., 2004). The non-observation data through semi-structured interview with the target community, the Jahai tribe in Royal Belum, is analysed through thematic analysis, which then integrated into the hierarchical planning (Jeakins et al. 2004) with the C&I evaluation result, to develop a sustainable multi-stakeholder development strategy for the seedlings program. The result shows that the development of seeds buyback program as a supplementary income stream to the seedlings buyback, while focusing on the capacity building to acquire ecological sounds data, can improve the sustainability index of the seedlings program.
