Obyek studi penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis karakter John Coffey didalam novel The Green Mile dengan menggunakan teori Defense Mechanism oleh Sigmund Freud untuk menentukan bagaimana defense mechanism memengaruhi kepribadian John Coffey dalam jangka panjang. Penelitian ini juga menyelidiki hubungan antara diskriminasi rasial dan pengaruhnya terhadap kesehatan mental korban diskriminasi dan bagaimana fenomena tersebut ditunjukan di dalam novel. Penelitian ini akan mendiskusikan dan menjawab pertanyaan yang terkait dengan bagaimana rasisme memengaruhi sifat pemalu John Coffey. Penelitian ini menggunakan data non-numerik berupa kutpian dari novel The Green Mile dan menganalisanya dengan metode kualitatif untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian dan mencapai kesimpulan. Berdasarkan observasi dan analisa kutipan dari novel The Green Mile, ditemukan bahwa John Coffey sebelumnya mengalami peristiwa traumatis yang menyebabkan perkembangan gangguan jiwa. Trauma dan diskriminasi yang dialami oleh John Coffey di dalam novel memiliki hubungan dengan perkembangan kepribadian John Coffey.

The objective of the research in this thesis is to analyze John Coffey's character in the novel "The Green Mile" based on Freudian's theory of Defense Mechanism in order to determine how employing a defense mechanism in a long term affects his personality. The research also explored the correlation between racial discrimination and its effects on the victim's psychological health and how the phenomenon is being reflected in the novel. This research discussed and answered questions related to how the practice of racism influence the timid personality of John Coffey. This research utilized non-numerical data in the form of excerpts from the novel and analyzing the data with qualitative methods in order to answer research questions and reach a conclusion. From the observation and analysis of dialogues and non-dialogue texts within the novel, it was revealed that John Coffey had experienced traumatic events in the past which led him to develop a mental disorder. The trauma he had experienced in the past and the discrimination he received throughout the novel is correlated with the development of his personality.
