STEREOTIPE ISLAM DAN WANITA MUSLIM DALAM FILM MARVEL STUDIOS: ANALISIS REPRESENTASI SERIES MS. MARVEL

Sebagai instrumen budaya populer, film sangat efektif dalam mempengaruhi dan mentransformasi mindset audiens. Hingga saat ini, industri perfilman dunia masih berkiblat pada Hollywood, terutama film tentang superhero. Marvel Studios menjadi salah satu studio terpopuler yang memproduksi film bergenre superhero di Hollywood. Marvel, sebagai produsen produk hiburan, memiliki jumlah penggemar yang sangat banyak. Penelitian ini menganalisis representasi Islam dan wanita muslim dalam salah satu film garapan Marvel Studios, Ms. Marvel. Film seri ini muncul sebagai film superhero pertama dalam sejarah film superhero Hollywood yang menjadikan perempuan Muslim sebagai tokoh utama. Tesis ini mengkaji representasi perempuan Muslim di tengah Islamofobia yang masih melekat di Amerika dan di tengah persepsi Barat terhadap bias gender di kalangan Islam. Penelitian ini melihat lebih dalam tentang citra Islam melalui penggambaran tokoh Muslim, khususnya tokoh wanita dalam Ms. Marvel. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall. Dalam perspektif Stuart Hall, representasi adalah salah satu tindakan penting yang memproduksi kebudayaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis semiotika Roland Barthes. Model analisis ini digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi simbol dan tanda yang bekerja melalui makna. Ms Marvel diasumsikan sebagai teks yang menyimpan makna denotatif dan konotatif dalam kode-kode teks dan gambar yang ditampilkan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Ms. Marvel menggambarkan Islam sebagai agama yang inklusif dan adaptif. Ms Marvel juga mencitrakan Islam sebagai agama yang masih konservatif soal kesetaraan gender dengan memotret banyak isu terkait representasi Islam sebagai agama yang identik dengan superioritas laki-laki.

As an instrument of popular culture, film is very effective in influencing and transforming the audience's mindset. Until now, the global film industry is still oriented towards Hollywood, especially superhero film. Marvel Studios is one of the most popular studios producing superhero genre in Hollywood. Marvel, as an entertainment product manufacturer, has a massive number of fans. This study analyzes the representation of Islam and Muslim women in Marvel Studios film, Ms. Marvel. The film series emerges as the first superhero film in the history of Hollywood superhero movies to appoint a Muslim woman as the main character. This thesis examines the representation of Muslim women in the midst of Islamophobia that is still inherent in America and in the midst of Western perceptions of gender bias among Muslims. This research takes a deeper look at the image of Islam through the depiction of Muslim figures, especially the female character in Ms. Marvel. This study employs Stuart Hall's representation theory. In Hall's perspective, representation is one of the important actions that produce culture. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method. This model is used to identify symbols and signs that work through meaning. Ms Marvel is assumed to be a text that holds denotative and connotative meanings in the text codes and images displayed. This research found that Ms. Marvel describes Islam as an inclusive and adaptive religion. Ms. Marvel also portrays Islam as a religion that is still conservative about gender equality by depicting many issues related to the representation of Islam as a religion that is identical with male superiority.
