Taboo Words in the TV Series Sex Education

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari penggunaan kata-kata tabu di musim pertama serial TV Sex Education. Teori fungsi kata tabu dari Azzaro (2005) dan Allan & Burridge (2009) dipergunakan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan penggunaan kata tabu dalam serial tersebut. Secara keseluruhan, terdapat 114 tuturan kata-kata tabu dalam serial TV Sex Education. Fungsi penggunaan kata tabu yang paling umum digunakan oleh karakter adalah bersumpah, diikuti dengan penghinaan atau ekspresi kasar. Sedangkan fungsi yang paling sedikit digunakan adalah ekspresi solidaritas sosial dan pilihan stilistika. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya variasi frekuensi dari penggunaan kata-kata tabu berdasarkan gender dan kelompok usia penutur. Berkenaan dengan gender, tokoh pria maupun wanita menggunakan kata-kata tabu pada frekuensi yang hampir sama. 58 dari 114 kata dan ungkapan tabu digunakan oleh tokoh wanita dan 56 oleh tokoh pria. Dari segi kelompok usia, tokoh muda atau remaja dalam Sex Education ini tampaknya lebih sering menggunakan kata-kata tabu daripada tokoh dewasa. Secara keseluruhan, 84 dari 114 kata dan ungkapan tabu digunakan oleh tokoh remaja dan 30 oleh tokoh dewasa. Selain itu, terdapat juga disparitas frekuensi fungsi kata tabu pada empat jenis kelamin dan kelompok umur tertentu, yaitu laki-laki dewasa dan laki-laki muda; wanita dewasa dan wanita muda; laki-laki dewasa dan wanita dewasa; laki-laki muda dan wanita muda.

This undergraduate thesis aims at investigating the use of taboo words in the first season of the TV series Sex Education. Azzaro (2005) and Allan & Burridge's (2009) functions of taboo words were furthermore employed to identify and classify the use of taboo words in the TV series. There were 114 utterances of taboo words in the TV series. The most commonly used function by the characters is swearing, followed by insults or abusive expressions. Meanwhile, the least used functions are expression of social solidarity and stylistic choices. The results indicate that there were variations in the frequencies of the use of taboo words based on the gender and age group of the speakers. In regard to gender, both male and female use taboo words at nearly the same frequency. In fact, 58 out of 114 taboo words and expressions were used by female characters and 56 by male characters. Furthermore, with respect to age group, young characters or teenagers in Sex Education appear to use taboo words more frequently than the adult characters. Overall, 84 out of 114 taboo words and expressions were used by teenage characters and 30 by adult characters. In addition, there are frequency differences in the use of taboo words in four specific gender and age groups. Those groups are adult male and young male; adult female and young female; adult male and adult female; and young male and young female.
