The Main Character's Failure in the Individuation Process as Seen in Catherine Lacey's Nobody Is Ever Missing

Penelitian ini mendiskusikan tentang proses individuasi tokoh utama dalam novel Nobody Is Ever Missing karya Catherine Lacey. Studi ini mengaplikasikan pendekatan psikologis karena penulis menganggap bahwa pendekatan tersebut dianggap paling relevan untuk menganalisis proses tersebut. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis proses individuasi si tokoh utama serta menemukan penyebab dari kegagalan si tokoh utama dalam proses tersebut. Identifikasi proses individuasi dalam penelitian ini menggunakan gambaran umum yang dikemukakan oleh Charles Gustav Jung dalam teorinya yang memberikan penjelasan tentang proses yang harus dilalui oleh individu untuk mencapai keutuhan secara psikologis. Untuk mendukung keseluruhan analisis, riset kepustakaan dilakukan bersamaan dengan novel Nobody Is Ever Missing itu sendiri serta artikel-artikel dari sumber terpercaya. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa ada lima tahapan yang dilalui tokoh utama dalam proses individuasi yaitu kejadian traumatis dan kurangnya kasih sayang sebagai panggilan untuk menjalani proses individuasi, pengakuan jati diri tokoh utama yang sesungguhnya, pengakuan atas sisi buruk, keseimbangan antara dua gender dalam diri, dan terakhir, munculnya arketipe Self. Meskipun tokoh utama telah melalui kelima tahapan tersebut, pada akhirnya dia gagal dalam mencapai individuasi. Lebih lanjut, hasil penelitian menunjukan penyebab dari kegagalan tersebut adalah masih adanya perasaan tidak diinginkan yang telah dia rasakan sejak kecil, kurangnya kehangatan dan kasih sayang dari keluarga, dan kekerasan verbal maupun fisik yang dia dapat dari suaminya.

This study discusses the main character's psychological journey in Catherine Lacey's Nobody Is Ever Missing. This paper applies a psychological approach since it is considered to be the most suitable to analyze the main character's process toward self-wholeness. This research aims to analyze the main character's individuation process in achieving individuation and to find the cause of the main character's failure in that process. The general description of individuation process is identified through the theory of individuation proposed by Charles Gustav Jung which provides an explanation of the process that individuals must go through to achieve psychological wholeness. In order to support the analysis, library research was conducted alongside the novel itself as well as the articles from reliable sources. The result indicates that there are five stages that the main character goes through in her individuation process, namely traumatic events and lack of affirmation as a call for undergoing the individuation process, revealing the protagonist's true self, recognition of her dark side, the balance of two sexualities, and lastly existence of Self. Although the main character has gone through all those five stages, in the end she fails to achieve individuation. Furthermore, the result indicates that the causes of the main character's failure are the feeling of being unwanted that she had since childhood, the lack of warmth and affection, and verbal and physical abuse she gets from her husband.
