Smartphones provide convenience and benefit to humans in the digital era. However, problematic behaviors come along with the presence of smartphones. Smartphone addiction is one of these problematic behaviors, which starting to be found in several countries. Psychological factors, such as anxiety and depression, have an important role in various cases of addiction. However, pathological factors need to be investigated in smartphone addiction. This study aimed to examine whether pathological factors such as depression and anxiety have a significant role in smartphone addiction. Participants were recruited using a non-probability purposive sampling, snowball technique. A total of 154 students from the Special Region of Yogyakarta participated in this study. The results showed that depression and anxiety predicted smartphone addiction simultaneously (R² = .225, F = 21.858, p = .000). However, partially it was not found that depression predicted smartphone addiction (p > 0,05), while anxiety was found (p > 0,05). These findings indicated the important role of the anxiety variable in its contribution to smartphone addiction.
