My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman Musim 1. Pertama, Setting and Scene mempengaruhi derajat formalitas tuturan. Kedua, Participants membantu para pembicara memutuskan sejauh mana topik diskusi dapat berjalan. Ketiga, Ends memandu pembicara untuk mencapai tujuan mereka.
This research aims at investigating men's language features and observing the social variables, namely Setting and Scene, Participants, and Ends factors in the talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman Season 1. The data were the male speakers' utterances obtained from the seven episodes of the talk show. The data were classified using the categorization of men's language features proposed by Jennifer Coates (2013). The results showed that some of the men's languages used in the talk show were similar to what Coates proposed. There were 335 utterances classified into seven types of men's language features. The most frequently used feature is minimal responses (93 occurrences, or 27.76%), and is subsequently followed by information-seeking questions (59 occurrences, or 17.61%), command and directives (58 occurrences, or 17.31%), interruptions (41 occurrences, or 12.24%), the topic of current affairs, sports, and travel (31 occurrences, or 9.25%), swearing and taboo language (30 occurrences, or 8.96%), and compliments (23 occurrences, or 6.87%). The analysis of the social variables showed that the three components observed, namely Setting and Scene, Participants, and Ends influenced the way the speaker carried the conversation. First, the Setting and Scene affect the degree of formality of the speech. Second, Participants help the speakers decide how far the topics of the discussions go. Third, Ends guide the speakers to accomplish their goals.
