Mumpung Masih Mahasiswa (While We're Still Students): Temporal Reasoning of Indonesian Students "Doing Activism"

Guyer untuk "etnografi waktu dekat," sebuah alat navigasi untuk menganalisis dan menggambarkan penalaran temporal dari identitas mahasiswa Indonesia di tengah gelombang "aktivisme" yang tampak anakronistik sepanjang 2019-2020 di antara tendensi rasionalitas pemerintah yang semakin neoliberal di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari mahasiswa. Tertekan oleh gagasan mapan mahasiswa sebagai "harapan bangsa," seruan untuk memenuhi harapan tradisional orang tua, serta ketidakamanan neoliberal, penalaran temporal siswa tidak jarang dibayangi oleh beban-beban tersebut. Maka dari itu, tesis ini bertujuan untuk menjawab satu pertanyaan: "Bagaimana mahasiswa relawan SMI mengkonstruksi penalaran temporalnya?" Untuk menjawab pertanyaan ini melalui pendekatan etnografis, seperti observasi partisipatif dan wawancara�¢, saya berusaha mengidentifikasi, mendeskripsikan, dan merepresentasikan penalaran temporal gerakan berbasis mahasiswa di Yogyakarta, Social Movement Institute (SMI), seperti yang terlihat dalam praktik, ritual, eksperimentasinya; retorika dan narasi yang digunakannya, serta aspirasi pribadi sukarelawan mahasiswanya yang muncul dalam pembicaraan dan diskusi. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa relawan mahasiswa SMI membangun kompromi dimana "melaukan aktivisme" dapat dilakukan di dalam kerangka waktu spesifik yang telah ditentukan; melahirkan bentuk penalaran temporal tertentu dari enforced presentism yang saya sebut sebagai "mumpung masih mahasiswa."
This thesis is a research application of Jane I Guyer's proposal for the "ethnography of the near future," a navigational tool in order to analyze and describe the temporal reasoning of the student identity of Indonesia in the wake of a seemingly anachronistic surge of "activism" throughout 2019-2020 against the backdrop of the increasingly neoliberal "government rationality" in student's everyday lives. Compressed by the established notion of students as the "hope of the nation," the call for gratifying traditional parental hopes, as well as the neoliberal insecurity, students' temporal reasoning is not infrequently overshadowed by these burdens imposed on them. Thus, this thesis aims to answer one question: "How do student volunteers of SMI construct their temporal reasoning?" In order to answer this question, through ethnographic approaches, such as participatory observation and interviews, I endeavored to identify, describe, and represent the temporal reasoning of student-based movement in Yogyakarta, Social Movement Institute (SMI), as evident in its practices, rituals, experimentations; the rhetoric and narratives it uses, as well as its student volunteers' personal aspirations as emerged in talks and discussions. This research has found out that student volunteers of SMI construct a compromise where "doing activism" is reserved to a conformed time frame; giving birth to a particular form of temporal reasoning of enforced presentism I called "mumpung masih mahasiswa" (while still a student).
