Speaking Rights into Power through Nonviolent Resistance: The Case of 2013-2014 Ukrainian Protests

Selama tiga bulan musim dingin di akhir 2013 hingga awal 2014, Ukraina mengalami episode pergolakan sosial-politik yang luar biasa yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Euromaidan atau Revolution of Dignity. Sementara tuntutan awal adalah seruan untuk integrasi Eropa yang lebih dalam melalui Association Agreement, gerakan tersebut segera berkembang menjadi gerakan sosial nasional yang menuntut penghormatan terhadap hak asasi manusia dan demokrasi yang berfungsi dengan baik di Ukraina atas tindakan pemerintah yang dianggap merugikan. Sampai sekarang, protes Ukraina 2013-14 tercatat sebagai mobilisasi massa terbesar di Ukraina sejak kemerdekaan negara itu pada tahun 1991 dan demonstrasi pro-Eropa terbesar dalam sejarah, yang mengakibatkan perubahan rezim dan konstitusi dan kembalinya kebijakan luar negeri pro-Eropa. Dalam hal ini, skripsi ini akan mencoba memberikan kedalaman konseptual lebih lanjut untuk kasus ini, menggunakan berbagai konsep nirkekerasan termasuk consent theory of power, pillars of support, dan moral/political jiu-jitsu. Logika perlawanan nir-kekerasan akan membantu menjelaskan bagaimana gerakan ini mampu mendorong perubahan di negara ini melalui aksi kolektif.

During three winter months in late 2013 through early 2014, Ukraine experienced an extraordinary episode of socio-political upheaval later known as Euromaidan or the Revolution of Dignity. While the initial demand is a call for deeper European integration through the Association Agreement, the movement soon grew into a nation-wide social movement which demanded respect for human rights and a well-functioning democracy in Ukraine over the perceived harmful actions of the government. As of now, the 2013-14 Ukrainian protests are recorded as the largest mass mobilization in Ukraine since the country's independence in 1991 and the largest pro-European rally in history, resulting in a regime and constitutional change and a return to pro-European foreign policy. In this respect, this thesis will try to provide further conceptual depth to the matter, using prominent nonviolent concepts including the consent theory of power, pillars of support, and moral/political jiu-jitsu. The logic of nonviolent resistance will help explain how the movement is able to force change in the country through collective action.
