The Media and The Discourse of Women and Oppressive Authority: CNN's Representation of Afghan Women Under The Taliban Rule

Perempuan di Afghanistan kembali mengalami penindasan sejak Taliban sekali lagi mendapat kekuasaan atas Afghanistan pada tahun 2021, setelah menikmati kebebasan selama pemerintahan non-otoriter dari 2001-2021. Kehidupan perempuan Afghanistan yang hidup di bawah represi Taliban menarik perhatian global dan menjadi fokus berbagai media internasional. Artikel ini mencoba menganalisis sejauh mana media internasional, dalam hal ini CNN, merepresentasikan perempuan Afghanistan di bawah kekuasaan Taliban. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis wacana kritis, penelitian ini berfokus pada narasi tekstual di CNN yang meliput perempuan Afghanistan di bawah pemerintahan Taliban saat ini. Mengacu pada bahasa Bourdieu dan kekuatan simbolik yang berfokus pada pendekatan linguistik, tulisan ini menganalisis wacana dalam artikel berita CNN dengan menggunakan perspektif pasca-kolonial seperti subjektivitas dan subalternitas. Temuan menunjukkan hegemonik wacana tertentu yang membekas pada representasi perempuan Afghanistan hingga saat ini sebagian besar suara mereka masih belum sepenuhnya dirasakan. Penelitian ini, di sisi lain, juga menemukan upaya CNN untuk mengubah representasi yang awalnya menunjukkan kerentanan menjadi perlawanan dari perempuan Afghanistan dalam memperjuangkan hak-hak mereka. Meski demikian, ideologi CNN mempengaruhi penentuan bahasa yang digunakan untuk melanggengkan wacana dominan representasi 'perempuan dunia ketiga'.

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, women in Afghanistan got back to the condition of extreme repression after enjoying more freedom during previous democratic rule from 2001-2021. The life of Afghan women living under the strict restriction of the Taliban rule attracts global attention and becomes the concern of many international media reports. This thesis attempts to analyze the extent to which international media represent Afghan women under the Taliban's rule. Using the critical discourse analysis method, the research focuses on reports of CNN on Afghan women under the recent return of Taliban rule. This thesis selects CNN as an example of Western media that upholds democratic values. In reference to Bourdieu's language and symbolic power, which focuses on a linguistic approach, this thesis analysis the discourse in CNN's reports using post-colonial perspectives such as subjectivity, subalternity, language and symbolic power. The findings show the dominance of certain discourses that still leaves a bias on the representation of Afghan women whose majority of their voices are still not fully resolved. On the other hand, this thesis also found at CNN's efforts to change the representation that initially showed weakness into resistance from Afghan women who fought for their rights. Hence, CNN's ideology determines the language they select with the purpose of perpetuating a hegemonic discourse for the representation of 'third world women'.
