De Eendaagsche Express: Kereta Api Cepat di Pulau Jawa, 1929-1942

Penelitian ini membahas tentang teknologi transportasi kereta api pada awal abad ke-20. Pada periode tersebut, keberadaan transportasi yang menawarkan kecepatan dan ketepatan menjadi kebutuhan bagi sebagian besar orang, termasuk di kota-kota besar di Jawa. Hal ini seiring dengan kegiatan mobilitas yang terjadi secara masif. Oleh karena jumlah transportasi cepat yang memadai masih dikatakan terbatas, maka dibutuhkan sebuah alternatif yang mampu mengakomodasi kebutuhan masyarakat tersebut. Staatsspoorwgen selaku perusahaan kereta api negara memiliki terobosan untuk mengoperasikan kereta api cepat yang dapat menjangkau jarak hingga 827 kilometer dalam jangkauan waktu satu hari, yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Eendaagsche Express. Kereta cepat tersebut menjadi simbol kemajuan dalam bidang transportasi di Jawa, sebab mampu merevolusi jarak, waktu, dan gerak yang sebelumnya masih bersifat terbatas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian sejarah. Penelitian ini dikaji dengan menggunakan sumber-sumber sejarah primer dan sekunder, berupa dokumen pemerintah kolonial, majalah, koran, katalog iklan, dan referensi lain yang sezaman. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan bahwa transportasi kereta api cepat satu hari Eendaagsche Express, menjadi sebuah alternatif bagi minimnya transportasi cepat di jalur darat pada awal abad ke-20. Dalam prosesnya, pembangunan kereta api cepat satu hari ini tidak sederhana, karena tak jarang terjadi perdebatan antara perusahaan kereta api negara dengan perusahaan kereta api swasta maupun parlemen di Belanda. Hingga akhir pengoperasiannya, kereta api milik Staatsspoorwegen ini telah mampu mengakomodasi perjalanan atau mobilitas masyarakat di kota-kota Jawa saat itu. Kereta api Eendaagsche Express ini juga memberi dampak pada semakin terhubungnya kota-kota di Jawa dalam jangkauan pengoperasian kereta api tersebut. Dengan demikian, kehadiran kereta api ekspres satu hari Eendaagssche Express ini telah membawa dampak positif bagi kemudahan aksesibilitas masyarakat serta memungkinkan terjadinya konektivitas antarkota di Jawa.

This study discusses about the history of rail transportation technology in the early 20th century. In that period, the existence of transportation that offered speed and accuracy became a necessity for most people, including in big cities in Java. This is in line with massive mobility activities. Because the number of adequate fast transportation is still limited, an alternative that is able to accommodate the needs of the community is needed. Staatsspoorwgen as the state railway company has a breakthrough to operate a fast train that can cover a distance of up to 827 kilometers in one day, which became known as the Eendaagsche Express. The fast train became a symbol of progress in the field of transportation in the Dutch East Indies, because it was able to revolutionize distance, time, and movement which were previously still limited. This study uses historical research methods. This research is examined using primary and secondary historical sources, in the form of colonial government documents, magazines, newspapers, advertising catalogs, and other contemporary references. The results of this study found that the one-day high-speed rail transportation, the Eendaagsche Express, became an alternative to the lack of fast transportation on land at the beginning of the 20th century. In the process, the construction of the one-day high-speed train is not simple, because there are often debates between state railway companies and private railway companies, and also with the Dutch parliament. Until the end of its operation, the train belonging to Staatsspoorwegen was able to accommodate the travel or mobility of people in cities of Java at that time. The Eendaagsche Express train also has an impact on the increasingly connected cities in Java within the operating range of the train. Thus, the presence of the Eendaagssche Express has had a positive impact on the ease of public accessibility and allows connectivity between cities in Java.
