Gender Variation in the Strategies and Functions of Apologies in Game of Thrones TV Series

Skripsi ini menyelidiki strategi permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh karakter pria dan wanita dalam serial TV fantasi Amerika Game of Thrones season pertama, serta fungsi sosial dari permintaan maaf tersebut. Skripsi ini juga mengidentifikasi tren dan preferensi strategi permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh karakter pria dan wanita. Data dikumpulkan dengan menonton serial TV. Setiap ucapan yang mengandung strategi permintaan maaf didokumentasikan bersama dengan jenis kelamin karakter, cap waktu dari subtitle dan konteks yang disediakan oleh naskah dan film. Permintaan maaf yang ditemukan dalam serial tersebut kemudian diklasifikasikan berdasarkan keterusterangannya menggunakan teori Blum-Kulka dan Olshtain (1984) dan teori Norrick (1975) tentang fungsi sosial permintaan maaf. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi permintaan maaf tidak langsung, yaitu Explanation atau Account of Situation, merupakan strategi yang paling sering digunakan baik oleh karakter pria maupun wanita. Selain itu, fungsi sosial yang paling umum dari permintaan maaf di Game of Thrones adalah Assuaging the wrath of the hearer. Meskipun tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam preferensi strategi, karakter perempuan cenderung meminta maaf lebih intens daripada laki-laki, ditunjukkan dalam penggunaan intensifikasi dan fitur bicara perempuan.

This paper investigates the apology strategies used by the male and female characters in the American fantasy TV series Game of Thrones season one, as well as the social functions of apologies. The paper also identified the trend and preference of apology strategies used by male and female characters. The data were collected from the TV series. Each utterance containing an apology strategy was documented along with the gender of the character, the time stamp from the subtitle and the context provided by the script and the movie. The apologies found in the series were then classified in terms of their directness using Blum-Kulka and Olshtain’s (1984) theory and Norrick’s (1975) theory of social functions of apology. The results show that the indirect apology strategy, Explanation or Account of Situation, was used as the most frequent strategy by both male and female characters. Furthermore, the most prevalent social function of apology in Game of Thrones was Assuage the wrath of the hearer. While there is no significant difference in the preference of strategy, female characters tended to apologize more intensely than the males, shown in the frequent use of intensification and women’s speech features.
